Moody becomes scarecrow No 9 at the school which is using them as a novel way to let the public know their 150th jubilee celebrations is in March. He joins Flick the Fireman, Lieutenant Dan, Roger, Betsy

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE DISTRICT council is working to tighten up its processes to stop unauthorised companies from illegally extracting water from fire hydrants. It is encouraging residents to email photos of companies taking water from fire hydrants so it can verify if it is stealing the water or not. Selwyn Times was made aware of the issue after a Rolleston resident, who did not want to be named, noticed companies with large water tankers taking water from nearby fire hydrants. Registered land developers use the water on their subdivision to comply with Environment Canterbury’s Air Regional Plan. The district council charges companies for water through the developers approaching its assets department and seeking authorisation. District council water services team leader Cinnil Thomas said all land developers working within the district council area are registered and are authorised to take water. •Turn to page 7

Police continue to make inquiries into the brutal attack on a 15-year-old in Rolleston – the one where his head was held under water while others chanted “drown him, drown him”. People have been interviewed and all police are saying at the moment is inquiries are continuing. TRUCK AND SHED DESTROYED A truck and shed were destroyed by fire in Lincoln on Sunday. Firefighters arrived at the Barnes Rd address at about 6.40pm and found the truck well ablaze. The fire then spread to a nearby shed. A fire crew from Lincoln and tankers from West Melton and Rolleston were sent to help extinguish the fire. The fire is not considered suspicious.

News Moody scarecrow joins group •From page 1 It was made by Moody’s former club Lincoln, and sponsored with $1000 by Lincoln Challenge. Principal Mike Molloy said pupils were excited to have Moody visit with some wearing All Blacks and Lincoln tops. For the four months leading up to the jubilee the scarecrows will remain in the paddock on Shands Rd to promote the fete event. Businesses have got on board, either sponsoring a scarecrow at $1000 or delivering their own scarecrow to get behind the event. The fundraising will go towards a jubilee pavilion structure to be installed over the school’s netball court area. Last month the school sent out an email asking businesses to either supply or sponsor a scarecrow.

It has quickly gained traction with the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 project team being the first to sponsor a scarecrow worth $1000. Four more sponsors are likely. Other scarecrows have been made, donated by organisations including the Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade and the New Zealand Defence Force. The idea of the scarecrows first came to life when the school was planning a fete to be held as part of its school celebrations in March next year. “At the same time the scarecrows were developed by one of our board members who is a very creative designer,” Mr Molloy said. The original scarecrows Trev and Betsy, created by Belinda McMillan, have fast become celebrities in the community.

It was suggested by another board member Paul Hill to create a scarecrow paddock and have them sponsored. “We believed that each business had their own story to tell and that the scarecrow gave them a vehicle to incorporate their persona, staff and business activities,” Mr Hill said. Man taken to hospital after jet boat crash By Georgia O’Connor-Harding TWO MEN had a lucky escape when their jet boat flipped and landed on a bank and became partially submerged on the Rakaia River on Saturday. The incident led to one man having to dig his way out from underneath the boat. Rakaia Volunteer Fire Station senior station officer Tyrone Burrowes said while the man was partially under the water he was able to breathe. “He was trapped but not life threatening,” he said. The other man was thrown out of the boat causing his leg to be pinned beneath the boat and the bank. It resulted in the second man receiving moderate injuries and he was taken to Ashburton Hospital for X-rays. Mr Burrowes said a mechanical failure was the cause for the jet boat tipping. Emergency services were alerted to the incident by a passerby. It was attended by the Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade and ambulance services.

Mr Booth has since told the Canterbury District Health Board that hospital staff had wrongly discharged Liam and taken his word he was not going to harm himself. Following Liam’s death, Mr Booth filed a complaint with the CDHB and is still waiting for a response. Mr Booth has since met with some of the CDHB’s key managers to ask what went wrong – but they were unable to tell him anything. He said things have been up and down for him since the death of his son. “Some days you win and some days you don’t. Some days it affects you more than others,” he said. Liam’s death has been referred to the coroner.

He will meet with Ms Adams to discuss his son Liam, 21, who died from a suspected suicide on October 2, days after he had been treated at Hillmorton Hospital. Liam’s body was found in Beckenham Park, close to where he lived. Mr Booth said he is hoping to show Ms Adams what is left for people who survive after there is suicide in the family and what sort of affect it has on them. “She is my local MP – she represents me in Parliament and I suppose she needs to be aware, but it is probably more Jacinda Ardern and the new Government. I need to get in their ear to be able to change the outcome to suicide,” he said. He has written to Ms Ardern and Minister of Health David Clark to raise awareness about the country’s mental

‘Drown him’ case continues

By Andrew King POLICE APPEAR to be closing in the youths who chanted “drown him” during the brutal assault of a teenager. The 15-year-old victim was viciously attacked by a group in Rolleston after a fireworks display on November 4. They dragged him to a water race and held his head under water. Some in the group chanted “drown him”. The Selwyn Times has learned police have been given names of suspects and private Facebook messages of an apology to

the victim. The four suspects are all teenagers. However, police are refusing to reveal where the investigation is at. On Monday, Detective Sergeant Joanne Parks said the investigation was “ongoing”. Many people have posted about the incident online, including friends of the victim, who believe they know who the attackers were, said the victim’s mother. A friend of the family posted a message on their behalf, which received more than 600 reactions and a number of

comments offering support and condemning the attack. “It was amazing to see how many people came up to us,” she said. The victim is a talented sportsman, his mother, who did not want to be named, said. The attack appears to have been robberymotivated. After being dragged to the water race, he broke free of his attackers and ran off, collapsing close to his home. The 15-year-old spent the night in Christchurch Hospital. •Local Views, p17

Twisted tales of fantasy for college production FUN WILL meet fantasy as steam punk melds in Ellesmere College’s stage production of musical Into the Woods JR. The school will bring a new adaption of Stephen Sondheim’s and James Lapine’s Tony awardwinning musical of Into the Woods to life. The fairy tale-styled production will be staged at the school hall this week. Teachers, parents along with the school’s drama, music, art and technology departments have been hard at work to create the production. Rhythm and Dance Studio teacher Emma Dunlop has pitched in creating challenging movement sequences for the show. Administration support teacher Lindsay Cook said all of the cast have put in hours of work and the show features some brilliant cameo performances. “It is difficult for students to fit in rehearsals with sports, work and study but these young performers have come through,” he said. Some students have doubled up in roles as others have pulled out of the show while one student is rehearsing on crutches. “But the show will go on,” Mr Cook said. He said while the musical is

No NCEA allows time for Christmas concert By Georgia O’Connor-Harding CHRISTMAS HAS come early at Rolleston College with the school gearing up for its holidaythemed production to be staged this week. Elf The Musical JR is the first production to be staged by the school as it nears the end of its founding year at the school. It features a full year 9 cast with about 30 students performing in the show and 10 working behind the scenes on sound and lighting. Teachers Martin Hannan, Merrin Diack and Sophie Ralph have also made up the production team for the show. Director and teacher Sam Gimblett said because the school only has juniors at the moment it is able to perform an end of year production because the seniors are not impacted by NCEA. “We thought it would be a fun one to do,” she said. The show is based on the American Christmas film Elf starring Will Ferrell. It is based on a would-be elf Buddy who grows up in the North Pole unaware he is a human. With Santa’s permission Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his real father.

experience in it before they work really hard at being good at it and trying their best,” she said. Elf The Musical JR will be performed at Rolleston College’s auditorium this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with doors opening at 6.30pm. Tickets are available from the school’s admin desk.

Get to know Ellesmere College’s head girl Ellesmere College has announced its new leadership team for next year with Fylgia Romero taking the role as head girl. She spoke to year 13 student and chief editor of the school’s magazine Nicole Ashby What made you decide to apply for head student? I have a real passion for leading which has arisen from being involved in leadership roles at my youth group outside of school. I was also really inspired by former head student Sam Bright’s speech as he showed that you don’t have to be super popular or academic to be great and a great leader. I am inspired to lead and I believe I am a natural leader and I can’t wait to use this to help younger people in the school. What are some things you want to implement at Ellesmere College? I want to put a real focus on equality and diversity and I believe the head student group next year is going to be great at this. I have previously been a part of the well being team and through this I have also gained a passion for promoting anti-bullying and believe that we should also promote equality for all differences not just in race.

help others. What qualities do you have that will make you a great leader of Ellesmere College? I am not afraid to cross lines and see the difference between morals and law and the fact that the law is not always right. I intend to look beyond what is right in front of me and work with that as well as passion to be the best leader I can be. What are some of your hobbies and passions? And how will these help influence your role as a head student? I am a part of youth group that has given me ample opportunities for public speaking as we travel around to other youth groups. It is important for a leader to speak in front of the public and address important topics. I have a real passion for music and like leadership you have to pour your whole heart into it. I believe you should pour your whole heart into everything that you do. Where do you see yourself heading in the future? I have two options. Time management. Experiences in youth group has helped me to manage my time. Pip has always been very respectful and one word I would describe her as being is genuine. She has always worked really hard and I know she will do so in the head student team as well. Both of the boys, Iain and Matt, work really hard and are determined to do the best they can in their respective roles. Iain is kind and doesn’t follow others and this will be key for being a head student.

Lincoln’s head students earn role SCHOOLS By Georgia O’Connor-Harding LINCOLN HIGH School has named its new head students for next year. Petra Campbell and Gabriel Clarke will step into the role as head girl and boy respectively, with Taylin Smith and Carlito Shalfoon as their deputies. The new student leadership team was named after the top eight applicants for the role were put through a three-month selection process. The top eight students created posters to advertise themselves around the school before they attended a “Head 2 Head” workshop to undertake problemsolving activities. They were then required to work alongside the school management team, the junior council and police to run the school’s Junior Black Light Dance. Assistant principal Kylie Wissel said it was an opportunity to observe how different applicants responded and interacted with junior students. The students then attended the Delta Community Support Trust’s disco evening, which aimed to help people experiencing personal hardship, disability,

Mrs Wissel said the environment challenged students to step out of their comfort zones and engage with a community group. “Anybody can sit and bluff their way through an interview, but they can’t bluff their way through working (with) intellectually disabled people,” she said. The top eight students then performed a speech to year 9-12 students about their vision for the school. The entire school, including students and staff, then voted for their preferred head students. Mrs Wissel said it was an eye-opening experience for the

students to find out what being a head student was about and the expectations that come with it. “No selection process is ever perfect, but it does give us a very strong indication as to where our strengths are going to be,” she said. She said the students were blown away by how their perception of leadership changed through the process. Giving up an international hairdressing Ellesmere College teacher Steven Henderson spends his days teaching art and helping his students reach their full potential. But before he was a teacher, Mr Henderson led a successful career in the hairdressing industry. He spoke to Georgia O’Connor-Harding

How did your career start out? I had a hairdressing salon here some years ago. So I started off as a hairdresser and I did hair and make-up for stylists on photoshoots before I won southern stylist and male stylist of the year for the Schwarzkopf professional hair expo awards in the 90s. I was asked to do a hairdressing symposium show in Auckland the very next week, which I did, and then I met an international distributing manager for international company KMS Hair. The next week, I was doing a show for 5000 people. The career I had as an artist and director started that way. When did you become involved in art? My career started off as a hairdresser but I started painting and doing art work. I always sold it in design stores with beautiful

furniture in Canterbury. In hairdressing, I travelled all through South Africa, America, Australia and New Zealand. I was awarded international artist of the year in South Africa in the late 90s. I toured Australia with KMS Hair. I would always fly to Los Angeles normally or Sydney for photoshoots. I would fly there and they would have agency models. The $10,000-a-day girls. We would style them. And then a month later, I would be driving through Los Angeles and see my work on a billboard. While I was there, I came up with concepts for KMS. When I first got there, I told them you need to make a product called sea salt spray mixed with salt and silicon. I took them a product selling well in New Zealand; said this is popular down under but this is what is wrong with it. It became a No 1 seller. What was it like seeing your work on a billboard? For the first time it was surreal. In America, it was really interesting. I went to hairdressing symposium shows where there were thousands of people in the audience and I had to have security because Americans are fanatic and they all wanted to see the Kiwi. I got up and would show my work and images behind me with mas-

sive big screens. I remember one time hopping off the stage thinking ‘I could just walk out with the crowd’ – typical Kiwi mentality. Then the crowd turned on me and pinned me against the stage and the security had to pull me out. I suddenly realised then the level of craziness the people were – how they instantly idolise you if you are from somewhere else or doing something interesting. I was one of the few hairdressers to have my work published in magazine American Salon. It was unheard of in New Zealand to get that. It must have been a crazy experience being swarmed by people? It was really weird. One of the weirdest moments was when I was with a girlfriend of mine in Christchurch. She worked for the company at KMS Hair. We were hanging out together and we were asked to go up to this suite. The man was a big distributor for KMS in America. He said come up to my room and have a few drinks. I was with this lady and said ‘sure I would love to’ being the Kiwi way. Then it became really weird and he was idolising me. I started to realise the profile I was starting to get in America. I got to do photoshoots with Elle magazine and Vogue magazine.

career to inspire high school artists I styled advertisements for those magazines and their billboards. It must have been huge for you having an influence in the fashion industry? I didn’t realise at the time. I just did it. That whole Kiwi mentality. It was not until I gave it all away because I wanted to. I loved it but then the passion disappeared. Because you are up against people, there is a lot of tall-poppy syndrome. Was that what made you decide you had enough? At times, I got glimpses of what it must be like to be a celebrity. Towards the end, I thought I am not sure I want this. I had always wanted to be a creative director globally. Finally, the job was offered to me heading up an agency for Sabre Corporation and I said no. How did you come to be a teacher at Ellesmere College? About 15 years ago, I became disheartened with the work I was doing. I had not lost the love of the craft, rather I became tired of dealing with the public. At that time, I had taken to producing art works as a creative outlet, at the time it was purely for me. An artist friend saw my work and talked me into a joint

art exhibition. Reluctantly, I agreed and produced several works which sold. I felt like somewhat of a fraud as I did not have any training or, at that time, a degree in art. So began the journey of acquiring an arts degree. When I completed this, it seemed natural to me to gain a post-grad in secondary school education, which I did. Teaching came naturally. My first teaching job was in a small Northland school made up of predominately Maori students. My partner and I had moved to Northland from Christchurch to develop a 15 acre (6ha) water-front peninsular we had bought several years earlier. However, we did not love the far north, we missed Canterbury. Ellesmere College was near by and it was my intention to work part-time. After one year, because of vacancies, I had become fulltime teaching an array of subjects.

Tell me about your love for gardening? We bought a heritage property, which was 150-years-old, which came with a very overgrown garden and so it has taken a lot of my time to try to bring that garden back; to reinvent it. The Ellesmere Garden Tour is coming

up – it is the first time the house is being seen. It hasn’t ever been opened to the public. What is the name of the heritage property? Thornycroft in Brookside. Brookside is named after the Brooks family and it’s actually their original homestead. The earthquakes happened and we felt compelled to move back to Christchurch. My partner and I came back and our house was ruined in town. This house just happened to be for sale. We drove up the driveway and it was love at first site. Where did you grow up? I grew up in a small town called Ngongotaha (Bay of Plenty) with a family of nine brothers and four sisters and a solo mum. I went to a rugby school. Can you imagine me coming out of that. Creativity was hushed up. I came out of Western Heights High School. How did you cope? You were most certainly ostracised. As a young boy, my saviour was finding like-minded creative people. I never found it in my

school, I was horribly bullied. As soon as I could leave I fled that high school. I left at 15 and went off to the big city and held down three jobs. One was a hairdressing apprenticeship at Blitz Hair Design. I worked at a nursery and I worked in a hotel lugging suitcases for Chinese tourists. I set up my first hairdressing salon in Rotorua called Ragged in the 80s, which was incredibly successful. Then I went to Auckland before coming to Christchurch. How are you finding teaching at Ellesmere College? I teach some of the art programme. I teach tourism and my absolute all-time favourite – teaching those kids who struggle with their learning. What is the one lesson you pass onto your students? I was once asked what makes you so successful and I went, being able to laugh at it. Getting a laugh out of the day and not taking it too seriously. For those kids who don’t have much, who have been bullied – I am that perfect teacher who can actually connect with them. I have experienced the poverty of being in a big family with a single mother. I had experienced extreme bullying because I am a gay man. I have experienced discrimination.

forewings with darker brown wing tips. They produce two to three generations in a year, depending on climate. Females lay eggs between six to 10 days after emerging from pupae, with as many as 170 eggs laid in one session and as many as 1500 eggs in their lifetime. Dependent on local temperature, eggs hatch after about 30 days. Larvae are yellow-green, with light brown heads, while older caterpillars

have darker green stripes along the body and can reach 18 mm in length. Larvae can cause significant damage to developing buds, leaves and fruit, especially in apples, requiring insecticide application in most commercial orchards. Natural enemies include parasitic flies and wasps that inject eggs onto or into the LBAM larvae, eventually killing them and reducing their damage.

Firefighter’s long service recognised LONG-serving station officer Alister Brown has been recognised for 25 years service to the Coalgate Volunteer Fire Brigade. He was recognised at an award ceremony at the Glentunnel Community Centre recently. Only four per cent of firefighters throughout the country achieve this medal. More than 130 people turned out for the event. Senior station officer Phillip Shaw said it was a good evening with people coming to recognise Mr Brown’s gold star award. “We held other awards but he was the centre of attention of course,” he said. The United Fire Brigade Association awards were presented by United Fire Brigades Association past president Chris Price. Long service, good conduct medals and clasps were presented by assistant area manager Steve Butler. Presentations were also made by the Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigade Association president Tyrone Burrowes, Gold Star Association president Hamish Peter and Mayor Sam Broughton.

Coster wins national title at Canty Show FORMER national representative shearer and multiple all-breeds champion Tony Coster reckoned he only shore in the New Zealand corriedale championship to get out of doing a job. But trading the job he says he would have otherwise been doing produced unexpected results for the now 50-year-old Rakaia veteran. He beat world champion John Kirkpatrick by more than a minute in a six-man final to win the Canterbury Show feature for a third time. “I’m on the committee, or at least I help run a few things,” he said. “If I hadn’t shorn I would have had a few jobs to do.” It was only his second competition this season, having made an appearance at Ashburton last month only because he was there with wife, Sheryl, who was “doing the points”. He reckons it’s his last dig on the competition board until the Methven show in March, probably only because the wife is again mastering the event’s complex scoring system. Shearing on stand six, which in the show pavilion brings the spectators as close to the stand as they possibly can without having to shear the sheep as well, Coster had it good, he said. “A

good pen,” he said in a shearer’s assessment of sheep anyone with a swinging arm and a handpiece would like to peel away. Previously winning in 2007 and 2013, Coster shore the dozen coarse wool sheep in 18min 33.63sec, with Kirkpatrick finishing next in 19min 39.27sec. The time-points advantage,

along with second-best combined board and pen points, was something no one else was able to overcome. Coster eventually claimed the win by a comfortable margin of almost five points from defending champion Nathan Stratford, of Invercargill. Kirkpatrick had to settle for third, and fourth was Mataura

shearer Brett Roberts, who had the best combined points on the board and in the pens. Cutting back on the competitions hasn’t meant cutting back on the shearing for Coster, who also runs a courier van. He said he’d just come off the lambshear, and his fitness was “pretty good”. “It’s that you just don’t really have quite that confidence against the guys that are shearing competitions all the time,” he said, especially with world teams champions, Stratford and Kirkpatrick, having been in action on a weekly basis since the season started at the beginning of last month. Coster’s “retirement” simply means retreating from the same schedule. He didn’t enter the PGG Wrightson Wool National Circuit for first time in more than 20 years, during which he has won the series four times. “I think since even before PGG Wrightson became the sponsors,” he said, reflecting on his years in the series which ends with a final each year at the Golden Shears and which originated with the first presentation of the McSkimming Memorial Triple Crown in 1973. Series leader Tory Pyper, of

Winton, was unable to be at the Canterbury Show, but had already guaranteed a top-12 place for the March showdown after strong performances in heats at Alexandra (fine wool) and Waimate (strong wool). Top series and also probable finals-qualifying points went to Ringakaha Paewai, of Gore, and Ethan Pankhurst, of Masterton, who were first and second in the heats, which had 24 shearers chasing the Canterbury title. There was a significant upset in the blade shearing final with 2010 New Zealand world championships representative Allen Gemmell, of North Canterbury, ending the run of Fairlie farmer Tony Dobbs, who had been unbeaten in the event since coming out of retirement from competition in 2013. Gemmell had won once previously, 17 years ago. South Island-based Chilean world championships representative, Luis Pincol, had his biggest win, after a string of minor-show triumphs. He took out the senior final by more than six points ahead of Taumarunui shearer Lionel Taumata, who was first to finish in a little over 14min for six sheep. –NZ Herald

Meetings Selwyn District Council, Police and the Licenced premises across the district are participating in the Christmas/New Year annual drink drive campaign, encouraging everyone to sort a safe ride home before going out for a few drinks this summer. Drink driving puts everyone at risk of being injured or killed in a road crash that could have been avoided. In the Selwyn district between 2012 and 2016, there were over 150 crashes where alcohol was involved. These crashes resulted in eight fatalities and 40 people receiving serious injuries. In addition, many minor crashes resulted in people receiving injuries, as well as damage to vehicles and properties. In many cases when drivers are affected by alcohol, inappropriate speed and failure to wear a safety belt also contributes to the severity of the crash. Not surprisingly, these types of crashes occur between Friday evening and Sunday morning. This year’s campaign encourages drivers to think about sorting their ride home before going out. Safe options include organising a sober driver or using the courtesy van. We can all do our bit by discouraging friends from driving if they have been drinking. As part of the campaign, posters, coasters and bar mats will be distributed to hotels, taverns, sport clubs and other licenced premises in the Selwyn District in late November and early December. Selwyn District Council Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning commends the work done by local hotels and taverns to keep patrons safe. “Each year as part of our road safety campaign, we distribute free resources to licenced premises to encourage and support their host responsibility activities and we appreciate them coming on board with our promotion.” Senior Sergeant Pete Stills encourages everyone drinking alcohol when socialising to take advantage of the services offered by these local businesses. “Many responsible premises across the district offer courtesy vans, we recommend everyone to use these if they have not organised other safe means to get home,” says Senior Sergeant Stills. Although many people believe drink drivers are less likely to be stopped by police when they drive on rural back roads, this is not the case. Canterbury Police will be carrying out more random patrols on all Selwyn roads over the Christmas/New Year holiday season. The booze bus will be deployed in both rural and urban areas. This year’s campaign is a simple and effective message which we can all share and encourage others to do so too.

Kerb and channel works, footpath and KEA crossing construction will be occurring on Weedons Ross Road in West Melton. Traffic delays and minor detours may be in place during the construction period. Selwyn sister city opportunities Selwyn District Council and the Malvern Community Board are encouraging residents to get involved in sister cities projects over the coming year. Selwyn has five international sister city relationships with opportunities for Selwyn residents to be involved in China, Japan, Indonesia and the USA. In September 2018 a group of residents from Selwyn, led by Mayor Sam Broughton, will visit Shandan at the time of the opening of the new Shandan Bailie Vocational College. The college will cater for 2000 students from throughout China. A second sister city relationship Selwyn has is with the Japanese area of Akitakata, near Hiroshima. Sister City Committee Chair Allison Rosanowski says the relationship was originally with Takamiya, a beautiful rural area, which is now part of the larger Akitakata amalgamated council district. “In late September and early October, there’s a wonderful opportunity for Selwyn residents to join a Darfield High School group travelling to Akitakata,” she says. “Highlights include visiting the Peace Park at Hiroshima, the shrines on Miyajima Island, traditional houses and spend time exploring soya bean, rice and nashi pear farms. Part of the time will be spent in homestays.” In conjunction with the Akitakata visit, the group can travel to the Malvern Community Board’s sister city, Yebetsu, Japan. Yebetsu is located on the northern shores of Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. From late August next year the Selwyn Sister City Committee is seeking volunteers to travel to Toraja in the highlands of Sulawesi, in Indonesia. “Selwyn is the first council in New Zealand to have a sister city relationship in Indonesia,” Mrs Rosanowski says. The fifth sister city is in Coventry, Rhode Island, USA. This is a picturesque historic area of the USA. All Selwyn sister city groups travel at their own expense and usually host incoming groups. Sister city trips give participants a different experience from tourist travel as there are opportunities to interact with local people. All trips are limited to adults aged 18 years and older. Twitter’s quake research role Student analysing emotional reactions By Bridget Rutherford EARTHQUAKE-related Twitter posts are being analysed to provide a new way of gauging how people are coping, and whether they need more support. Lincoln University PhD student Prerita Gupta is developing a recognition algorithm to identify emotions based on keywords in tweets from 2010-2016. So far, she has collected more than 250,000 tweets as part of the research, which is expected to take up to two years. The Complex Systems, Big Data and Informatics Initiative student said people experiencing upheavals often turned to social media to express their feelings, especially Twitter. She decided to research how people reacted emotionally online when earthquakes struck. “I thought it would be interesting to know which emotions they

The algorithm gauges intense reactions from people, and how they are coping. An example is

a tweet such as “Sharp lil jolt felt in this morning!!!. Forgot how much I hate them.’’ Ms Gupta said the tool could be used by psychologists as a new way of gauging emotional states. She said it could be used as a decision-making tool to understand the collective state of a group affected, and to provide them better support or assistance. The data had geographical locations, so they could see what area was impacted the most, she said. “This information is very useful for health providers in examining the relationship between emotions and the use of anti-depressant medicines, helpful for the Government to plan which affected area needs the maximum health benefit and for social welfare departments to

understand the level of support they should provide to the affected party.” Ms Gupta said traditional approaches such as interviews or surveys may not be the best way to collect data, as it reminded people of the experience and could be traumatising. Analysing Twitter posts was non-intrusive, she said. The Ministry of Health is also investigating whether Facebook or Twitter posts about illnesses or symptoms could be tracked to see if there is a trend in a particular area. It was also looking at whether school absentees, employee sick leave, over-the-counter pharmacy sales, tissue sales or Healthline calls could be utilised in preventing the spread of illnesses.

Hours of planning and work have gone into making this a great day out and there will be something for everyone in the family, especially motor enthusiasts. Covering 30 hectares, the Jones Road Auto Selwyn Motor Fest and Family Fun Day will be a huge affair with hundreds of cars, trucks, motorcycles, motors, tractors, steam engines and interesting displays, as well as market and food stalls. The first of its kind for the district, this event has attracted considerable interest with over 200 show vehicles registered so far. Motor vehicles on display will range from a 1914 Model T to late model cars like a 2014 Corvette and 2017 Lotus 7. The Ellesmere Vintage Club, Vintage Speedway and RATEC Motorsport will be there, while the Canterbury Mustang Club are making this day an official club event. “The grounds look fantastic with the grass cut and baled for seating. There’ll be something for everyone with a great show of motor vehicles and wide variety of stalls and entertainment throughout

the day,” says Selwyn District Councillor Craig Watson who is on the organising committee. Craig says the event will be a fete with a motor focus, cool activities and displays. Local emergency services including St John ambulances; vintage and car clubs; rally cars; the New Zealand Trucking Association; the Selwyn District Council; Residents’ Association; Selwyn Parenting Network; and other community groups will be present. There will be plenty for the children too, with a Bunnings Warehouse construction display, bouncy castles, face painting, pony rides, steam engine rides and more. Thirty plus market stalls will offer something for everyone, from motoring paraphernalia to children’s clothing and Tupperware, with an additional 15 food stalls and four coffee vendors providing a range of cuisine. Initiated by John Winchester and other local motoring enthusiasts, there has been tremendous support for the inaugural Jones Road Auto Selwyn Motor Fest and Family Fun Day. The help of many individuals and businesses contributing time, goods or financial backing, the participation of exhibitors, and the great assistance provided by the Lions Club and Lincoln Rotary who will assist with event and traffic management, have made this day possible.

Such support reflects the strong Selwyn community and recognises the critical role St John plays in the district. “With the public’s participation, this will be a superb day,” says Selwyn District Councillor, Craig Watson. The organisers would like to thank everyone who has played or will play a part in making the Jones Road Auto Selwyn Motor Fest a successful fundraiser for St John and exceptional and enjoyable community event.

Farmers reminded to watch irrigator aim With irrigation season underway, Environment Canterbury is reminding irrigators to be aware of where their water is going and irrigate the grass, not the road. Environment Canterbury principal resource management advisor Richard Purdon said several complaints have already been received so irrigators need to adjust their aim. “Irrigation onto roads, particularly gravel roads, is not only a waste of water but also has the potential to create safety issues for motorists. “It is the surprise element and the force of the water that could easily startle a motorist, it is especially dangerous for those on motorcycles. Our staff have been receiving an increasing number of calls, especially in our Ashburton office, and our locally based water zone officers will be responding to these on a case-by-case basis,” Mr Purdon said. Irrigation consent holders are responsible for the use of water that is applied to their properties, he said. “Resource consent conditions authorise the use of water to a consented piece of land, not to run to waste. While we understand it can be difficult on windy days, it is still a

breach of their consent. “Irrigation system operators must monitor the use of their water and equipment to make sure the water is used in the way that was authorised and not wasted.” Irrigation New Zealand chief executive

Andrew Curtis said the two main culprits for water going over-boundary were the end guns on pivot irrigators and travelling irrigators set up too close to roads. “Watering onto roads creates a significant safety hazard, so it’s really important for irrigators to ensure they water within their

When you set up your travelling irrigator always have a set-back distance from the road,” he said. “Aside from the safety issue, people don’t like seeing water being wasted by being sprayed onto roads. Farmers who irrigate do so under strict regulatory regimes so it’s important they justify their use of water by being efficient and responsible with it.”

Plenty for families to enjoy at annual A&P show

The annual Courtenay A&P Show is set to showcase the best of the Selwyn District’s rural productivity this Friday and Saturday, November 24-25, and will be the 142nd year for the popular event. Every year, the Courtenay A&P Association’s president chooses the theme for the show, and for 2017 president Ashley Seaton has chosen ‘sustainable farming’, with all the exhibitors in the big marquee displaying products representing this theme. Visitors will see the latest in farm equipment and machinery on show at the trade sites. The stock, and grain and seed competitions will again be fierce as farmers hope their entries will get the nod from the judges in reward for all their hard work. Those that have entered the produce, baking, handcrafts and photography competitions will also be hoping for good results in their class, with the public having the chance to view all the entries. Saturday will be a real family day out at the Show, with plenty of entertainment including the Clown Lolytwist and the Pedalmania bikes, which can carry up to five riders and will be available for free rides. There will also be craft stalls and food sites, wood-chopping, vintage car displays, rides and sideshows. Of course, the animals are always a

highlight of the Show. The children will love the interactive activities in the Arion Farm Park where they can hold and pet the baby animals such as lambs and rabbits. Horses will again be a key feature, with keen riders competing in the various events and classes. A spectacular event in the ring will see the stock and station horses being put through their paces on the obstacle course, while the harness horses and ponies will also keep the crowds entertained. The dog trial finals will take place in the main ring just before the Grand Parade. Also taking place in the ring to much hilarity will be the terrier race – anyone can bring their terrier to the show and enter the race on the day. Mingling with the crowds will be special guests, local MP Amy Adams and Selwyn District Mayor Sam Broughton and his wife Liz. The Courtenay A&P Show is being held at the Kirwee Showgrounds with the public expected to start arriving on Saturday from about 9.30am. Friday and Saturday, November 24-25, and will be the 142nd year for the popular event

Can you please tell me what is wrong with my Pittosporum? Most of the leaves are fine, there are just a few with this dirty-brown marking on them.

From the photos the problem could be an insect (psyllid) that attacks the leaves of the pittosporum causing the type of damage that the photos show. These insects are usually found on the underside of the leaf and are quite small. These usually only occur on the young spring growth but may also be present on the plants throughout the year. If the attack is very heavy then an insecticide may be needed, but usually the plant can cope without the need for any treatment. There are some signs of secondary infection from the insect damage but I think the plant will grow through it without any treatment needed.

We are at the time of year where your Rhododendrons will need fertilising. There are 3 main times to do this, in early spring, then again immediately after flowering, and then in early autumn. Rhododendrons are acid loving plants, so they require a specific fertiliser that cater to this. Intelligro Azalea, Camelia and Rhododendron fertiliser is great for this. We recommend that you apply the fertiliser at a rate of 100 grams per square metre around the dripline of the plant (where the outer leaves are). When you apply the fertiliser, be sure to leave a ring around the trunk of the plant so the fertiliser doesn’t come in contact with it. After application, make sure you give it a good water. Unsure how much 100 grams actually is? An adult handful is approximately 70 grams. Make sure you follow the directions properly, over-fertilising can be harmful. Keep up the watering through the hot months, your plant will thank you for it!

Show homes are a great way to gather ideas with the latest trends in design, home features and building materials on display. If not sure what to build, a plethora of house designs can be discovered on the websites of building companies while visiting their respective show homes allows you to visualise how given designs could work for you and to gain a feel for the space in given rooms. Building company representatives will work with you, adapting a favoured plan to meet your family’s needs then guiding you through the building process. Most companies cover the gamut of builds though each is likely to have a particular focus. Talk to their people so you understand where the company sits on the spectrum, from highly specified architecturally designed houses to more economic family homes. Look at the finish and quality of the show home and ask where you can see other homes the company has constructed. Ascertain whether the features and fittings in the show home are their standard or a step up on what is offered in the basic package. Some building companies have designers. Others prefer to work with their own library of plans, adapting a chosen one rather than starting from scratch. Enquire as to whether there is a fee for any concept drawings, changes to existing plans or new plans, before getting too far down the track. If you cannot find a plan you like, you might work with an architectural draftsperson or architect. When a plan is finalised, you can then invite selected building companies that specialise in the type of build you are seeking, to quote. Once you have all the

information together – the design, cost of building, build timeframe, and progress and final payment timeframe – you are in a position to select a building company. Until you sign on the dotted line, you are not committed to a given company and can walk away though there may be a charge for any plans drawn up if you do not proceed. Remember to compare ‘apples with apples’. Check that what is quoted is the same in each case. Changes to fixtures, fittings and other features can make a difference to the quoted price with the variances in quotes being due to disparities in quality and type of product used. Before committing to a build, organise finance based on the features you have chosen. Remember, each and every variation will affect the price, usually upwards. Get this sorted before the build starts. Most building companies will guide you through the choice and costing phase. Once the price is set avoid making changes to ensure the project keeps within budget. After all, the last thing you want is stress over money when moving into your lovely new home.

Making the most of show home viewing

Looking through show homes is a great way to get ideas for features and fittings to put into a new home. It can also be helpful for getting a spatial feel for other aspects of a house design. Before heading out for a day’s viewing, conduct an internet search. identify the locations of show home villages and the types and sizes of the various building company’s homes on display, noting down the square metre size of each home. if wanting a high end, architectural design, focus on the larger homes that have desirable design features. if at the entry or middle level of the market, earmark homes that fit this taking in other show homes for extra ideas. allow sufficient time when visiting each show home, asking for a floor plan that has room sizes before walking through. Check also the floor to ceiling height of the rooms and consider how this feels and whether you prefer a cosier feel with the standard ceiling eight of 2.4 metres or

more spaciousness created with a higher stud or exposed ceiling beams. if doors and windows are taller than normal, weigh their effect in creating a more luxurious and spacious feel, against potential inconvenience for small children, cleaning and maintenance. on entering each room, take account of how much furniture is in each room and whether there is sufficient space for the furniture you will have in the room and the size needed in a walk-in robe. Look too, at storage capacity throughout the home and whether this is adequate. in the living areas, consider whether a lounge separated from the family living room or a true open plan kitchen, dining, living/lounge area is preferable, and compare internal kitchens with those that have natural light.

Look too at the layout of the kitchen: whether to have an island sink or breakfast bar where a newspaper can be read, and children can sit and draw or complete homework; the positioning of appliances; and how important having a pantry is. for the little rooms, equate space and features desired with that needed, especially if the budget needs to be sharp. it might be nice to have a large walk-in shower with double shower heads but is this just fanciful and will the extra cleaning annoy you long term. a laundry in the garage is also more economical though a separate laundry may be handier. Bring the garage size into the equation also. as these vary considerably, assess the actual measurements of each garage viewed comparing this with the space

needed for your motor vehicles and other items to be stored there. if a good number of toys will be housed there, it may be sensible to increase the size of this area of the home. By imagining what you need, want and will have in your new home, you will be in a better position to confidently choose a design that works for you.
